The Missing Minute

When the interview arrived, it was twelve minutes longer than the podcast slot. Maya's task was straightforward: keep the strongest answers and remove repetition. The guest was a shop owner discussing a new traffic plan.
In one passage, he complained that delivery vans could no longer stop outside his shop. "The whole thing has been a disaster," he said. Maya marked the sentence as a possible opening.
A minute later, however, he explained that more people were now walking along the street and that sales had begun to rise. His main problem was the lack of a clear delivery arrangement. The plan itself, he admitted, might eventually help him.
Maya's first edit kept the complaint and cut most of the qualification. It was shorter, livelier and easier to promote. Listening again, she realised that the guest now sounded completely opposed to a scheme he partly supported.
The producer liked the strong opening. Maya played him the missing section. They argued about the time limit, then removed a less relevant discussion elsewhere.
The final interview was still not the whole conversation. No edit could be. But when the shop owner listened to it, he recognised his own position.
That evening, Maya changed the name of her editing folder from "Best Quotes" to "What They Meant". It would not solve every difficult decision, but it was a useful question to have on the screen.
