The Moon’s Changing Face

Toca una palabra para traducirla y guardarla para practicar.

The nearly full Moon, photographed from Earth against a dark sky.

One evening, the Moon looks like a thin smile. Later in the month, it looks like a bright circle. Is part of the Moon missing? No. The Moon is still there. Only the bright part we can see changes.

The Moon does not make its own light. It reflects light from the Sun towards us. The Sun lights one half of the Moon. As the Moon moves around Earth, we see more or less of that bright half. We call these different views phases.

Same Moon, different views

From new Moon to full Moon, we see more of the bright half.
  1. 1. New Moon
    Bright half faces away
  2. 2. Crescent Moon
    A thin bright part
  3. 3. Half Moon
    Half the view is bright
  4. 4. Full Moon
    The whole view is bright
The Moon stays round. After a full Moon, the bright part we see gets smaller again. Four example phases, viewed from the Northern Hemisphere. The outlines show the whole Moon, even when we cannot see it.

These changes are not caused by Earth’s shadow. When Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon, we call it a lunar eclipse.

You can also look for the Moon in the daytime. It is not only a visitor to the night sky. When its position and the light are right, you can see it against the blue sky. Try looking up on your next daytime walk.
