A Seat at the Meeting

Asha attends a council meeting where a plan of a station square with trees and a relocated bus stop is projected on a screen.

The council meeting about the station square was almost over when Asha arrived. On the screen were drawings of trees, outdoor tables and a wide space where traffic could no longer enter. Several speakers had described the plan as a transformation.

Asha liked the trees. She also knew the square at six in the morning, when she caught the first bus to the hospital. The proposed design moved her bus stop two streets away.

When she asked about the change, a consultant said the extra walk would take only four minutes. He had measured it himself. Asha explained that she usually travelled with her father, who used a walking frame, before dropping him at a day centre.

The room became quiet, and the consultant zoomed out of his drawing. The four-minute route included a steep slope.

Nobody abandoned the plan. Instead, the chair asked the team to test the route with people who used the station differently. Asha was invited to join a morning visit.

Afterwards, a neighbour congratulated her on defeating the consultants. Asha shook her head. She wanted the trees and the safer square. She also wanted her father to reach the bus.

At the next meeting, there was a revised stop near a level entrance. The drawing looked only slightly different. For Asha, that small change was the transformation.
