The Empty Shop Window

Ada cleans a large empty shop window in preparation for displaying local art.

The shop at the end of Ada's street had been empty for months. People walked past without looking at it. Ada thought the large window was a good place to show local art.

She called the owner and explained her idea. He agreed to let her use the window for one weekend, but she had to clean it first.

Ada invited her neighbours to bring drawings and photographs. She expected five or six pictures. By Friday, she had twenty.

On Saturday morning, people stopped outside the window. A boy pointed at a photograph of his dog. An older woman talked about a painting of the river.

Ada put a notebook by the open door for comments. One visitor wrote, "I live here, but I didn't know so many artists did too."

On Sunday, the owner came to see the pictures. He asked Ada if she would like another weekend next month.
